I have an HP Pavilion desktop pc running Vista Home Premium 64 and a Dell Inspiron Laptop running Vista Home Basic. Each can access the internet wirelessly, via router, with no problem and each can see one another but I can't get them to talk. Each machine has its own wireless network card that seem to work just fine.
I am the Administrator on both machines. There are two users on the desktop and one on the laptop. On the desktop, I've shared the C drive, the K drive (spare (storage) drive) and the E (CD/DVD) drive and given full permissions to everyone. On the desktop, each shared drive shows the network path. On the laptop, the C and D (CD/DVD) drive "Share" button is grayed out and and the network path is blank. I can't figure out why.
When I try to map a (laptop) network drive I get ""DELL_600M" is not setup to establish a connection on port "file and printer sharing (SMB)" with this computer." and "Windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically."
When I try from the laptop I get "\\Desktop-PC is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the Administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network provider name is invalid."
I have a feeling that the word "server" might be key here but I'm not sure and my head is spinning.
Any help here would be EXTREMELY appreciated. PLEASE HELP!

Windows Firewall is off. I have Norton 360 on both machines and I've tried disabling the firewalls temporarily and I still get the same results. I will definitely take a second, harder look at Norton to try to see if I'm missing something.
One other thing, I recently upgraded the laptop to Vista. Prior to that I had XP on it. I was able to access the laptop from the desktop but not the other way around.

Thanks for the info but I read that post you suggested and it seems the only thing I have in common with dchiggins is that I have a desktop and a laptop, both running Vista and both using Norton 360.
I have only one router/modem (I think Comcast refers to it as a gateway modem). Both of my computers connected to the router with no problem and both can access the internet. And, both can see one another but they just can't talk to each other. I even have a printer connect to the router via ethernet cable and both computers can access that.
I am going to try connecting the two computers via ethernet cable (just for sh!+s and giggles) to see what happens but ideally I'd like them to connect wirelessly so I can move the laptop to other locations in the house and not have it be tethered.
