Not sure if this is the right section, if not apologies and could a mod move it to the correct one please.

Motherboard Asus M2N - MX SE Plus. 160 gb sata 1 hd (system disk) 2 gb 800 ram. Computer used only for surfing the net and the odd letter or two

A elderly friend has asked me to look at his ageing computer, apparently two copies of Windows 7 on same partition, someones attempt to fix something went bad. I thought repartition/format/reinstall and all should be well ...not so.

When I received his computer at bootup Post was showing Bad Cmos Checksum or words to that effect, I took the old bios battery out and replaced it with a new one, problem solved and no more bad checksum messages. Next message to appear was Disk Read Error Please Restart, restarting kept getting the same message. I fired Win 7 install disc into the dvd drive to see if I could start things from there but got the same message "Disk Read Error Please Restart" there are two dvd drives on this setup and results were the same for both.

As the same message appeared on all three drives I began to suspect the mobo, I put in a spare PSU I had and know works well in case his psu was putting out low power, still the same problem. Took the hard drive out and put it into my working computer, I managed to install Win 7 onto it there which to me ruled out a problem with the reading the hard drive.

Put the HD back into the old computer, this time I got past the bios to the windows splash screen where it would reboot from there and remain in a sort of rebooting loop at the Win 7 splash screen until the only way to switch off was manually.

Does this sound like the motherboard is failing perhaps Sata IDE controllers or something?
