I have a HDMI cable plugged into my monitor to the back of my MB and I don't know how to get sound to come through my monitor instead of my headphones which are plugged into the audio jacks also on my MB. I look on control panel and all the HDMI sections say "Not Plugged In".

Please help!

Let's start with the simplest thing first. Does your monitor even have built in speakers? Does it have its own headphone jack?

Are you using the HDMI for your video signal, or are you trying to use it just for audio? If you're only wanting it for audio, therein may lie your problem. HDMI requires a video signal in order to send audio, even if it's just sending a constant blank/dark image. You would need to set your motherboard's HDMI out as your video device if you want to use its HDMI audio. It would be simpler if your monitor has a headphone jack and you can just split the audio from the audio output jack, and have it go to your headphones and monitor at the same time, and just unplug the monitor end when you're using your headphones.

Thanks very much! That's my problem then. I am just buying speakers instead. Thanks again!

My pleasure. I figured this out a few weeks ago, wanting to use my motherboard's HDMI for audio only, going to my surround sound receiver, while using my video card's HDMI for video, and I read online that HDMI needs video as a carrier signal, even for audio. Good luck with speaker shopping.
