Hi Everyone,
When booting my brand new system I hear 5 short beeps after boot, but only when I have my monitor connected to the HDMI port. And it actually boots fine after those 5 beeps, everything seems to be in working order, but the beeps seem to indicate some kind of hardware problem nonetheless.
When I connect the same monitor to the DVI port of my (only) graphics card, it boots fine, and without the beeps.
My system:
• Graphx: Radeon HD 7750 RoyalQueen Passive
• CPU: FX-8320
• Power: AP-550, 550 Watts
• Mobo: 990FX Extreme3, socket AM3+
• Memory: 8 GB DDR3-1600 Kit (2x 4 GB)
• Monitor: Eizo FlexScan HD2441W
I tried booting with another graphics card (HD 6800 series) of mine, and I see the same symptoms: it boots fine with my monitor connected to the DVI port, but gives of 5 beeps after boot when I connect to the HDMI port. When I use the same monitor and HD 6800 graphics card on my old system, it boots fine with the monitor connected to the HDMI port.
So it doesn't seem to be a graphics card issue, but rather a motherboard issue maybe? Or at least with this new system of mine with the above specs.
I've reseated the graphic cards of course. I've moved the card to another PCI express slot (both cards I mentioned, actually), I've reseated RAM, and booted with just one RAM, I interchanged the RAM positions. Just to be sure.
Since the beeps only are heard when I connect to the HDMI port, this instruction doesn't seem relevant:

I've checked out other similar posts on this forum, but they don't seem to apply to my problem, for instance:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1652475/asrock...
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1890582/amd-in...
.. these guys actually have *no* video.
I *do* have video, on both DVI and HDMI.
But the beeps?
According to ASRock documentation, and also this site:
http://www.biosflash.com/e/bios-beeps.htm
'5 short beeps' means 'Process failure'. Which doesn't tell me enough about what's causing this, and what I could try next, or which part I should send back.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Thanks!
Gary.

Have you tried updating the motherboard BIOS, I think the 5 beeps is processor failure but it doesn't make sense because you can still get in and everything works. Thanks for your reply.
No haven't tried that yet. I've been postponing upgrading my firmware.. I'm running version P1.50 and I see there's a version 1.70 out:
http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/990FX%20Extreme3/index.us....
But since it's running fine except for those beeps... I'm not sure that's the way to go? What would upgrading to 1.70 fix, or add for feature support?
Description of the firware only refers to:
Quote:
1. Support Secure Boot for AM3 CPU2. Improve memory compatibility.
3. Patch ZOTAC GT610 PCI VGA card

FX-8320 is not a supported processor on the 970 Extreme3.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/970%20Extreme3/?cat=CPU
That CPU is supported on a newer version - 970 Extreme3 R2.0

His PC works fine, he is just getting 5 beeps from the mobo when he is connected via HDMIExactly. I thought it was the graphics card, but when I use another card, I see the exact same symptoms: 5 beeps after boot when connected to HDMI, but everything seems to work fine after that.
And no beeps when connected to DVI port.
