Hello Tomshardware community!

About 3 weeks ago, my girlfriends computer started failing miserably, and I theorized it was mostly hard drive and OS slow down. So I bought her a new 1TB WD hard drive as well as a fresh OEM of windows 8. All in all costing about $160.

Now although this solved many problems, she decided that she was going to have me build her a computer from scratch and she has been gathering the money since. We purchased the pieces (minus the hard drive and OS since I was going to move it) and I built/booted the computer with no problem. The issue arises now when I boot the computer a few days later, and it tells me I have to activate windows, claiming this is being used on another computer. Keeping in mind that the hard drive has been moved, and the other computer hasn't even been booted since the build is there any way to fix this. I do not want to have to buy a new windows key (this one is brand new).

I do still have the disk, should I simply fresh install windows, and will this even work. I don't want the product key to be claimed as "used" when I am holding it.

Thanks in advance for the answers everyone!

Solution
1. Clean install on the new hardware is recommended.

2. Windows 8, be it OEM or Retail, can be installed as many times as needed. Only one PC at a time. You 'might' have to reactivate through the phone robot, but it will activate that license.

Again....if you bought it and you installed it, reinstall is not a problem.
