Right now I have 4 1GB sticks of RAM with DDR2-800mhz transfer speed. How much better will my PC perform in general if I upgrade to 2x 4GB DDR3-1600mhz sticks? Is this a significant improvement??

Solution
You can NOT install DDR3 ram into a DDR2 slot.
If you get a new MOB that supports DDR3 it will perform much better.
The amount of RAM will be an improvement. The MHz will make no real difference in real world computing.
8Gb of RAM is a sweet spot that performs very well.

After 8GB it is not bang for your buck anymore.
If your MOB supports 8Gb of RAM you can get some great DDR2 ram.
Look on eBay for a bunch of good prices.
Happy Computing! :)

Well #1 I failed to mention that I am getting an AsRock Z87 MoBo to replace the one I have. And why wouldn't you be able to put DDR3 RAM into a DDR3 slot???

Oh okay haha.

Thanks a lot for the direct answer. I hate when people dance around it.

So the speed really doesn't matter? Like I could get 2x4GB with 1333 DDR3 and it wouldn't perform any worse than 2x4GB with 1600 DDR3?

For those two different setups, there would maybe be a tiny difference. Almost certainly not noticeable in everyday use.
Buy whatever max your motherboard supports.

So would the 1333mhz be okay for gaming?
