Hi!
Recently, i built my new Gaming Pc. I have parts such as the GTX 670 and Intel I5 4th gen, but that isnt my issue.
Recently, i bought a game some of you may be familiar with, the DayZ Standalone.
Now like everyone i was experiencing some light fps problems and i had been fiddling around with files and whatnot to fix it. About a day after i had done that, my Dayz crashed. I rebooted the PC as it had gone completely unresponsive, and on reboot i found everything had slowed down. Loading applications such as steam and skype were taking an age, and loading Google Chrome seemed to keep crashing, so i restarted again. Everything seemed ok, so i went onto Dayz and played. Once i was done, i quit, and later i tried to play again. Suddenly, the loading time was horribly slow, and i couldn't seem to be able to load Dayz at all without a crash. I attempted to load Garrys Mod, and i got a slightly quicker load than Dayz but still massively slower than before. I kept to a routine of restarting and testing, and Dayz just seemed to keep crashing every time i tried to load, and Chrome seemed to crash at the slightest things like tabbing out and whatnot. I recalled that i had messed around with the Nvidia Control Panel to get a bit better performance in Dayz, so i reset it to default and it seemed ok for the first time booting Dayz, but on the second it was back to normal. I dont know what i did to cause these slow loading times for just about everything, but i know this isnt normal. I have tried running allsorts of antivirus software such as AVG and Spybot - Search and Destroy, and i have tried defragging my hard disk to no avail.

Toms Hardware has helped me before and im confident that i can be helped again! Sorry if this is in the wrong section, i wasn't entirely sure where to put the thread but it is a system problem as far as im concerned so i put it in here! Thanks!

Edit: Forgot to mention, my Ram is 8gb as the problem could lie there, but im not a computer genius so thats about as far as my hypothesis goes :D

When you boot your PC without starting DayZ does it run normally? If yes then your problem is linked to DayZ. At this point I would suggest that you remove DayZ to confirm that DayZ is the problem. You should also try looking in Windows Task Manager after your problem starts to see if there is any DayZ processes running even after you're done playing it. If all that doesn't work you could still try to reinstall your graphic card drivers or if you haven't done it install the newest drivers available.

It seems to be working a lot better now that ive deleted DayZ and havent been on it! For now this is a pretty decent solution to fix the slowness so im going to reinstall DayZ and see what happens! Thanks!

I have reinstalled DayZ and all seems to be running fine! Loading times seem to be back to normal and all is fine. I have played DayZ at least four times one after the other and all is good! I will notify you if anything else happens and thanks for the help! Best and most helpful community here!

Edit: Dayz suddenly started acting slow in the main menu, so i closed it. Now the problem of Dayz and games in steam loading slow seems to be recurring although im not experiencing the slow load times on other applications except Dayz yet. I think the problem only lies with Dayz.

Another interesting diagnosis, i have observed through task manager that my Disk percentage rises to 99/100% during these times of slow loading and sluggish responsiveness. Usually it is at 5-8% before running Dayz or when it is running smoothly. Hope this is helpful!

Edit: I've been browsing and apparently when the disk is being used up at like 100% it causes major sluggishness and makes systems slow to a crawl. Seeing as the Disk seems to cap after playing DayZ which results in me not being able to load DayZ after this point because of the slowness as the Disk isn't able to cope with another process. Whatever launching and ending DayZ does to triggers this mass use of disk space i do not know, but it is a step closer. Took me long enough to get there too :)

I guess it's the price to pay for getting in an early access game :/ The only thing I can say is make sure your drivers are all up to date and if it start slowing your PC again repeat the same process as before... Is there anything you do special or unusual before it starts slowing the game ? Like changing a specific setting or anything similar to that ?

I just thought it was odd as nobody else iv'e spoken too online with DayZ SA seems to have the same problem. I do change some settings down when i get in game but nothing that should cause a problem as i do it in the game menu. I thought it might just be because i got it in early access but now im slightly worried as no one else has this problem as far as i know.

Edit: My Graphics Card driver is up to date, but i am not sure if there is a driver for my processor and if there is i haven't updated in a looong time. I will check that out but im convinced its a problem with the disk drive. Other people have had problems with the disk drive going to 100% and pc slowing but not in DayZ yet.

There's no drivers to download for a CPU and I wouldn't blame your hard drive.. Your computer was completely fine before you install the game and after you uninstall it. Be careful when playing with a hard drive, you don't want to corrupt or even lose all of your data.

Yeah well the problem is with the Disk usage skyrocketing when playing DayZ and after playing DayZ although it doesn't show it is using much the disk usage is at 100%. I have absolutely no idea where to go from here so help would be appreciated from anyone as this is an ongoing problem for me. Thanks.

Hello greatscape,

Thought i would shed some light on this for you.

#1 You are not seeing your disk usage go to 100% when you are playing DayZ, You are likely watching you CPU usage go to 100%. This is ABSOLUTELY normal. DayZ is a very CPU intense game as it has not yet been optimized.

#2 DayZ is a ALPHA stage game. Which means gameplay, performance and other issues are highly likely!

#3 Since DayZ is in Alpha and not optimized, it takes a fairly decent computer to get a enjoyable outcome when playing DayZ.

#4 AVG is not CPU friendly AV either.

Conclusion.

While your hardware should be plenty to run DayZ, it sounds like you may have some other hardware issue. I would suggest looking at your hard drive. Failing hard drives tend to make things load slow, freezing and general performance issues. If hard drive does not appear to be the issue, I would test your power supply voltage outputs, failing PSU can also cause similar problems if it's not delivering enough power. Start up and loading games are the most power intense times for a PC. If hard drive and PSU are not the issue, next to check would be the CPU.
