I'm attempting to set up a school network for a high school with more than a thousand students. I have the basic idea for what I need but I'm not really a network guy and never really understood how to set up a network. If anyone could help me with this I would gladly appreciate it.

Solution
look at the EnGenius stuff... They have switches with hand off all the Access Points and all the WiFi rigging needed. I use them for "industrial" implementations. Awesome stuff. ( I also teach Networking...)

I forgot to specify that this is my final for a course that I am taking. I'm not setting up a network for an actual high school.

In that case you should already have the requisite knowledge to complete this assignment. Unless of course you haven't been paying attention in class. If you have a specific question then ask it. However, questions of a general nature, as your OP is, is simply asking us to do your homework for you. You will never learn anything that way.

I have been paying attention I just really have trouble understanding servers and the requisites to set it up, I have all of the basic hardware, such as desktops, but when it comes to attempting to getting switches, servers, firewalls, etc. I just end up screwing something up. Essentially all I am asking for is some help setting up a network for a school.

do you have the Cisco "Packet Trace" tool? It allows you to build virtual networks (with Cisco equipment :-( ) but it works pretty good.

basic setup:
WAN source -> Firewall -> [Router <-> Authentication Point (Server)] -> Switch -> Cable Plant -> Access Points ~> End Points

:) What are you missing and how detailed do you need to be?

That would suggest that you've chosen the wrong path. Still, if you have specific questions (".... all I am asking for help setting up a network for a school" is not a specific question) then tell us what you've done and exactly where you are having difficulties. The folks here will be more than happy to guide you. However, no one here will do the work for you.

Of course not, I wasn't expecting anyone to just do the work for me, I was just hoping for some incite. And the class isn't necessarily for networking. The class was for the past semester PC trouble shooting and repairing, but unfortunately there was a budget drop and the networking and repair class was put together and this semester was networking which I'm not good at.

I also have to factor in things like security locks, TVs, printers, etc. other than the computer themselves.

Thanks for the help man.

Packet tracer is only a tool that helps to a point learn how to configure routers. This is mostly used to learn the commands to pass the ccna test it is very limited in its actual abilities it only supports a subset of the commands. Most times GNS3 is a better tool since it actually runs a IOS image but it is also a limited tool used for passing certifications mostly.

What he is asking for is a design not details on how to implement. It is a person that knows the requirements that would have to select from all the solutions. I would suspect they have been give some guidance in the class.

Otherwise if there are no design or budget constraints just buy bunch of cisco nexus 7718 and put them in every room and cable them together with the newest 40g optics and run 10g to every desktop just for fun. I promise this solution will solve any requirement but nobody can afford it.

If it is attributed, then it is research. In reality at the high school level, no one is expecting the student to engineer a complete system. I did plenty of papers that included interviewing professionals and incorporating the results into my work. Noted and documented.
