Hello all,

I'm having a display problem with my laptop, and I'm not sure where to go next. Short story: the display is malfunctioning, I can't afford a new laptop right now, and I need to get it back in shape for work.

The machine: it's an HP HDX16, model number x16t-1200, p/n NK135AV. It has a 16" WXGA (1366 x 768) single lamp (CCFL) display. Running windows 7.

The history of the problem: actually, there were two separate issues, and I'm not positive which one is giving me trouble now. At first, the screen would flicker and I would momentarily get thin stripes of bright color while opening the lid. It would open happen while the lid was being actively moved, or if it stopped in a bad spot. To fix it, I'd simply nudge the lid a touch, and everything would return to normal. This problem became slightly worse with time. Now, I suspect, this may be the primary issue.

However, at some point while the above was occurring, a separate problem surfaced. The laptop suddenly shutdown one day (overheated? or maybe battery went to 0%, as the remaining meter doesn't work until sleep and resume) and when I went to restart, the screen was black. I thought it was completely done, until I realized everything was running normally in the background, and it was simply the display that was black. When Windows finally booted, the entire screen had a blue cast, there were lines through it, and it was displaying in 800x600 resolution! If I put it to sleep and woke it up, however, it would generally wake up with the correct resolution, no blue cast, no lines -- though the lid movement flicker would still occur.

About a week ago, I opened the lid from sleep and got this:

I nudged the lid, but it didn't go away! The pattern changes, but that's all I can get. Did some reading, some poking around, and here are the results: the machine functions perfectly when (as now) I use an external display on the VGA port. It also functions flawlessly through HDMI! So at least something about the video card has to be working. I immediately suspected the LCD cable (wear on the cable and shorting explains flicker; I thought maybe lack of detection of the display even explained the occasional 800x600 behavior). So I opened the laptop, replaced the LCD cable with a 30-pin LCD cable (different part number, but seems identical) from eBay, expected a fix and - nothing.

I was just about to order a new LCD display panel last night, but thought I'd better post here first. Could it be an inverter? Do you actually think the display is OK? Could it be a connector or joint on a card somewhere? The physical movement flicker resembles the pattern now.

Any help you can offer would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you!

Hi, the inverter will not do the problem you have, you already change the cable, and the problem still remains. You have a good picture with an external monitor, but with the screen from the laptop, when you move the lid, you have some vertical lines, then what I suspect, the screen is defective.
