Currently I am gaming on a 1080i TV on a couch (30hz). I am thinking about switching to desktop gaming. Would it be wise to buy a 1440p monitor, then upgrade my GPU down the line? My current specs are:

CPU
Intel Core i5 3570K @ 3.40GHz 34 °C
Ivy Bridge 22nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Single-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)
Motherboard
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z77MX-D3H (Intel Core i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz) 28 °C
Graphics
NS-26L450A11 (1920x1080@29Hz)
2048MB ATI AMD Radeon HD 7800 Series (VISIONTEK 7850) 59 °C
Storage
59GB OCZ-AGILITY3 (SSD) 30 °C
931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-9YN162 (SATA) 31 °C
931GB Hitachi HUA721010KLA330 (SATA) 26 °C
Power Supply
600W OCZ Semi-modular PSU

I wouldn't mind cranking settings down a bit, but how bad would it affect performance?

Yes the 7850 may struggle handling that resolution. getting an ips 1080p monitor would do much better than the 1080i and also would see a huge difference. also it would save you alot!!! Over a 1440p. of cash for a better graphics card my advise is a gtx 770 or gtx 780 or r9 280x or r9 290 or r9 290x.

this monitor is very good Full HD with ips

Or if you still continue to get a 1440p than this is a excellent choice.

How bad will it look if i turn the res down to 1080p for graphically intesive games? Will it look much worse than a 1080p 26" monitor? I can imagine it will look a little better due to the pixel density, but i may be wrong.
