Hi,

I have a linksys E2500 (4 port wireless router) connected to airport extreme and a HP Laserjet 400 connected to it. I am able to set up parental control on the WIFI network from the linksys router to prevent my kids from playing games for too long or too late.

My teenage son was able to plug in the LAN cable from the airport extreme and access the internet in the middle of the night.

How can I set up parental control all over the network?

Thank you.

Parental control varies a bit from router to router so its hard to say how or if you can do this. The best way if possible is to set a small group of machine (ie yours) to have no restrictions and then everything else by default is restricted.

The reason you want to avoid trying to restrict certain machines is it is a never ending battle to keep this list right. It will either limit by mac address or by IP address. You can change both pretty easy on a end users machine..wireless is a little more tricky but can be done on most wireless cards.

In your case since the wireless nic has a different IP and mac than the ethernet when he hooked up a cable your router did not know to restrict that mac/ip and just allowed it. Even if you...

So the only way is to allow a small group of authorized machines and deny all the rest.....and then hope the kid is not smart enough to find and steal one of the mac addresses that is allowed full access.

Bill, thanks for suggestion.

Went back into router control panel, found that I can't do that on linksys, just not able to input MAC address to allow/refuse except on the wireless entry.
