The refrence models are usually lower clocked and they have weaker cooling solutions than the "custom" cards. I am using a 780 ti Ghz and that one is the most powerful one of them. it has good cooling and high clocks compared to the others and it beats the refrence models by a mile.

I started with a 780 oc which was within' a few percent of stock 780ti with the oc I had on it, but with a 780ti oc plus the extra MHz I add puts me at 1105mhz base and 1171mhz boost and which is noticeably faster and was only a few more bucks.
