I just built a new rig. As the title says, any game I play will work fine for a few minutes before freezing and then going back to the desktop and becoming unresponsive.

Going into the event viewer, the crash is always accompanied by this warning:
"Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered"

I've been googling the issue for days now, but with no luck - I feel like I've tried everything.
Can anybody please help me out here?

Specs are as follows:
-Intel Core i5 3.4ghz
-Asus Radeon R7 260x
-8GB RAM
-EVGA 650W PSU

uninstall the drivers fully, and then reinstall the latest drivers from AMD.

what temps is the gpu and cpu reaching?

I've tried reinstalling graphics drivers to no effect.
GPU temperature reaches 75C around the crash, never any higher.
As for CPU temp, I'll do a test now.

Thanks for the speedy reply, by the way.

with the new rig make sure your running the newest bios file on the motherboard and the newest intel chipset drivers from intel. if the rig is still crashing then your pushing the gpu to hard. a lot of lower end gpu if you go high video rez and some games you can get the gpu to heat up faster then the stock fan speed can cool the gpu down. you may have to use msi afterburner to max out the gpu fan and turn down the eye candy.

I'm not sure if that's the issue, as I've only been running fairly low-spec games such as STALKER and Mount&Blade (albeit at high settings)

As for the CPU test, maximum temperature at the time of crash was 55C

Just updated BIOS (which I feel very silly for not doing earlier) but it has unfortunately made no difference.
I will now try running the programs at lower settings and get back to you.

I think you might be on to something smorizio
Ran at REALLY low settings - and didn't get a crash!
The problem is, I don't want to run on really low settings. Any ideas as to what I can do about this?

use msi afterburner the gpu drivers of newer gpu lock the fan at 30-40 percent till they hit a set temp. sometimes the driver fan profile wont speed the fan up to keep the card cool. try running the game with thefan set at max speed. the noise may be loud but see if the temp stays near 50c.

Completely uninstalled all software that came with my GPU, then only reinstalled the latest drivers.
Installed and ran MSI AB with fan locked at 40%
I found that the game lasted much longer before crashing, but it always eventually happens.

Tried again with fan locked at 100% to find the same thing happened.
The GPU temperature was at a constant 65C right up until the crash.

Interestingly, MSI AB listed my GPU usage as 100% the whole time, despite no drops in framerate or any other signs of strain.

I'm starting to think I have a faulty card. Any other ideas?

do you have vsynch on or off? if it is off this would cause 100% utilisation.

that all sounds very odd then, I would say driver issue but you've reinstalled those.

I'll try swapping in a friend's GPU to see if that fixes the issue, if it does then I'm going to get a refund on this thing.

So I installed my friend's Radeon HD 6800, and have not experienced another crash.
The wierdest thing is, I installed my R7 260x into his PC, and it also hasn't crashed yet.

So what on earth is going on??

the older card is a pci 2.0 card. look at your friends system if it an older intel or amd system his rig may be pci 2.0 max speed. if it is..look in your bios and see if you cna change the pci bus speed from 3.0 to 2.0 and put your card back into your rig. if it runs fine at 2.0 speed then the issue is with your mb or cpu and not your gpu.

With my R7 installed, changed PCI-E settings in BIOS from 'Auto' to 'Gen3'
No effect.
Then changed the setting to 'Gen2', once again, no difference.

Alright then guys, it seems as though there's nothing else I can do.
I'll try and return it to the seller.
Thanks for your suggestions
