Hey guys,

I recently built a new pc with the specs listed below and I have a extremely frustrating problem that I cannot get to the bottom of and was wondering if anyone could help please?

The problem is that my monitor is VGA only as it's a little old now and I am using a dvi adapter to plug into the gfx card but after windows loads the monitor goes out of range and I have to switch to the vga cable to the the vga port motherboard connector.

The problem is that If I use the motherboard vga connector then windows loads fine in 1680 x 1050 but then when I play games it uses the intel graphics.

So yeah I can't seem to get my monitor to work through my gfx card. I've tried to disable the intel driver and tried different bios settings like to use the PCIe slot but I can't fix it and I've pretty much lost hope now.

on a side note I can get windows to display on my 42 inch hd tv in 1366 x 768 Resolution.

Splendid
While using the graphics card, boot windows into safe mode (hit f8 during post), go to windows' monitor settings, set the display to 60Hz (most likely it is already at 60Hz, just reselect it, also set the ress to native if it isn't), hit ok and accept if it asks whether you want to keep the new settings, boot back into windows normally. The setting should stick even for normal boot up.

edit just noticed you're using win8.1, I'm not sure if this will work on it but give it a try nevertheless :)

edit2: ok looks like it's going to be a bit more tricky to get win8 into safe mode lol

Ok I booted into safemode with the vga > Dvi adapter plugged into the gfx card and it had 64Hz as the setting but the resolution was greyed out and set at 1024 x 768 so I couldn't change it.

I know for sure my monitor is set as 1680 x 1050 because when I connected the hdmi along side the dvi and I checked the display settings through my TV it said the monitor is set at that resolution and 1366 x 768 for the TV.

It just feels like something doesn't like me using the vga to dvi adapter because I'm totally out of ideas.

Yeah bit strange but definitely 64Hz. No other options either.
