My friend was dismantling his old rig and he gave he his old mobo+cpu. It was a Gigabyte - UD3 for 1156 with an i7 - 870 at 2.93Ghz. My current setup uses a FX6300 at 4.2Ghz with a Gigabyte 990FXA UD3 and the Evo 212 cooler. Is it worth switching CPU's and OCing again with the i7 or will I not get any difference in performance?

I've had that same chip and board in multiple configs/builds. 4.4-4.5GHz under the EVO is easily doable with near stock voltage. That's free performance on 6 cores and will make it a bit better overall than the i7 870. Not worth changing.

If anything, you can put an FX 8320 or 8350 in that board with a liquid cooler if you need an upgrade. Based on your current setup that upgrade path makes much more...

Also, your board uses a 990FX chipset. It will support 2 PCIe GPUs at x16. So adding a 2nd matching GPU is also a decent upgrade path with that particular board.
