I have shared a hard drive on my desktop PC and I would like to access it with my laptop. The problem is that when the PC goes to sleep mode I can't access the hard drive anymore. How can I wake up the PC with my laptop?

I can WOL the PC with iPad using Apple Remote. WOL is enabled in BIOS and in Windows settings.

Because the PC serves as HTPC and needs to be ready 24/7 but would cost too much to run 24/7.

Your computer should not suck up that much power with your monitors and hard disks off when idle. Should not even cost $10 a month more in electricity (this is U.S. electricty costs).

Are you using windows or linux on your htpc? If using windows you could have htpc send WOL packet to desktop on bootup. If on Linux and you use fstab then you would need to have it run script to do WOL after network and then rerun command to mount drives in fstab.
You could also do this on the router level if it supports it (all aftermarket firmware like tomato and dd-wrt does). You can have a script send WOL packet if HTPC ping is successfull.
