Can Sky offer me a faster broadband speed on a phone line owned by BT

Sky have told me that they can offer me a faster speed than what i have now on BT which is up to 2mbps which is terrible. BT are saying that Sky are lying and Sky are saying BT are lying and that they can give me faster speeds. Bt are also saying that my line can only offer me up to 4.5mbps which i am not getting anyway.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I doubt that sky can improve on BT. Sky borrow the infrastructure from BT, they can't replace it, they might have better contention ratios that kind of thing, but I doubt that they can do better. What they might be able to do is offer you the same, but with unlimited volume etc.

Sky offers 2 levels of ADSL(Asymmetric digital subscriber line) broadband access, one with an advertised speed of up to 8Mbps and one for network areas with a top speed advertised at up to 14Mbps.
