Hello! So my mother had gotten me a Pavillion 500-214 for my birthday a couple weeks ago and I tried to game on it. It was pretty bad (lol) so I upgraded the GPU to a GTX 660. Total bottleneck with the A8-6600k. So I'm looking into purchasing a new CPU as well as a new motherboard since HP has their own branded motherboards that locks overclocking and all that bad stuff. So I have a couple questions.

1. Does HP have their own brand for every component? Like for example the hard-drive only goes into an HP motherboard?

2. Would an AMD Athlon x4 760k bottleneck a GTX 660 2GB?

3. How should I look into purchasing a new motherboard? (Like how should I found out what socket type my motherboard has.)

Thanks! :)

Go here for info on which processors you can up grade to. ((limited as are most OEM PC's)

Being an OEM PC, odds are if you change your mobe, your OS will not work, OEM's tie their OEM OS to the oruginal (model) mobo, you would need to buy a new OS.
OEM PC's are built with a price point in mind, upgrading is not there strength (although some up grades can be done)

Is that all besides the motherboard and processor?

Research your motherboard to see what upgrades are availible. If you get a decent GPU then your power supply will have to be upgraded. Get someting from Seasonic, XFX, Corsair or Rosewill that is 80+ bronze or gold rated. Dont go cheap on the item that can destroy the rest of your computer.

The APU platform as a whole is going to hold you back. An FX-6300 will perform better then a 760k can.

Dont go too crazy on upgrading that tower as builidng another one will most likley come out cheaper. New Mobo, CPU, PSU, GPU, and OS is 90% of the parts for a new computer.

I have upgraded my PSU, although it's a cheap 650W from Chiefmax so I'm going to upgrade it later. Maybe this one? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

The CX serries are decent enough. Wait until you know what GPU you want to have in the future (even if it will be a year down the road) and get a PSU that will support it as 500w will not give you the headroom with a high end card like a 760 or better.
