I am planning on buying an entry level laptop. It will be for general purpose usage mainly - like surfing the net, skyping, document editing and occasionally for running some heavy softwares - like oracle, eclipse, etc. ones that consume some good amount of memory, but does not involve much of graphics.

So, can you please suggest me what processor would best suit me with 4gb ddr3 RAM -

2nd Gen Pentium Dual Core or 3rd Gen Pentium Dual Core or 2nd Gen i3 ?

Please also specify the recommended clock speed.

As stated by the above member, just purchase the one you can afford; or spend the amount you're willing to on a laptop.

I use my computer for general use, and heavy on the development side (Eclipse/Android development, video rendering and so on). My computer can handle these tasks well, but not the best; it does lag sometimes and requires a lot of time video encoding (but inserting a GPU may solve most of the issues). I have a second generation Pentium Dual Core, a G840 (you can google this for benchmarks). 4GB RAM, and using the Intel's HD graphics (no dedicated GPU) on Windows 7 x64.

However my computer is a desktop, so it's open to upgrades anytime. You may want to consider this factor when purchasing a laptop, i.e. Can it be upgraded later?

i3's are often great for value, but it's completely your choice. Personally my computer is snappy enough for general use, and I don't think I'll be upgrading anytime soon. I'll probably wait for prices on the 2nd gen i7's to drop before upgrading.

All the best. ;)
