Changed monitor cable now P8P67 won't POST?!

Hi,

I’ve apparently borked my computer to the point where it won’t POST just by replacing the DVI cable - and I don’t understand how that is at all possible.

I have a new monitor coming tomorrow, and wanted to see if the very short DVI cable I bought for it is even long enough to use with my current monitor, so I switched the cables round. Before I did that it was a fully working system. No problems whatsoever. Now though, I don’t think the the computer POSTs, I can’t get anything to appear on my monitor, and I don’t know what to do!

I have a P8P67 motherboard which has a DRAM LED light which flashes intermittently red. It comes on about every 5 seconds, and stays on for a second. I don’t know if this is bad, I can’t find anywhere on the internet that explains what the intermittent flashing means, only a continuous red and a flashing red. I’ve tried every combo of RAM stick/RAM slot and none of them helped anyway. The intermittent red flashing might be fine for all I know. I cannot get any beep’s out of it - now I did have to extract the speaker from a computer that hasn’t been touched in about 10 years so it’s possible the speaker itself doesn’t work, but I would imagine it’s just the computer that’s not working. I’ve tried removing the GPU to get beeps out of it but no luck there.

All the fans come on, and I *think* I can hear the HDD starting up. Just no beeps, and no visual.

HELP! What should I do? I have absolutely no idea how to go about fixing this!

Thanks for any help at all!

There is a possibility that there was a short circuit caused by the GPU. To test this theory, try building your system out of the case:

1. Remove motherboard from case, and then place it on a non-conductive surface, such as the motherboard box.
2. Remove the PSU from the case, unless the cables are long enough to reach the motherboard while out of the case.
3. Install one DIMM, GPU, and connect HDD and PSU.
4. Power on your system by touching the PWR_SW pins with a metal object.

If you still don't see a display, move the installed DIMM to the next slot over. Repeat until either you have a display, or until you've tried every DIMM in every DIMM slot.

I could be mistaken, but the P67 based mobos do not have integrated GPU. If I'm right, you need the GPU installed to get a display. If these statements are accurate, then how do you know the mobo does not POST with your GPU removed?

I don't think it's the graphics card, RAM, or PSU as I have replaced all of them. I guess I will try removing the case then! After that, it's gotta be the motherboard I suppose...

After taking everything out of the case, I am unable to get the "no VGA" card beeps. If I take all the RAM out, I get the no ram beeps, but then even without any graphics hardware, I don't get the no VGA beeps. Am I correct in assuming this means there is something wrong with the motherboard?

I've replaced the motherboard - and I get the exact same result! With no RAM I get the no RAM beeps, and with the RAM installed I get nothing! Considering i've replaced literally every other component it MUST be the cpu right? I'm not going crazy am I?

I've changed the:
Motherboard
Case
RAM
Graphics card
PSU

Nothing helped. It has to be the CPU. The CPU blew when I changed the monitor DVI cable. What. The. Fuck.

I agree, very odd, and also very unlikely. The CPU could have gone bad, but certainly not a direct result of changing a monitor cable. Now that you've gone through the trouble of ruling out just about everything, have you tried the simple things, like:

Trying a different monitor
Trying a different cable (VGA with DVI adapter, HDMI, etc.)

The only way to test your CPU is in another motherboard, or test a known working CPU in your motherboard.
