Hello everyone,

i recently came across a problem with my graphics card.

I tried to play Risen 2: Dark Waters and after being in game for about 1 min i got a black screen and stuck sound, so i restarted my computer and turned the graphics down, same thing happened again.A couple of hours later i decided to play resident evil 4 the HD remake and got the same problem. i then installed the GPU meter for windows gadgets and saw that my GPU temp was 82C on idle and my fan speed was at 87%. Soon after i decided to safe my GPU by opening the case and put an external USB fan in front of the GPU but that doesn't help much either, its now at 72C and 75% on idle, i read on the internet that the temperature should be around 80C in games with descend graphics, is there anything i can do to lower the temperature?

I already checked if i have tasks running that i don't need/ that use too much resources.

(sorry for poor grammar, non-native)

Kind regards

well, gpuz wouldnt lie! with zero load these temps are extremely high!. if that just happened rescently and since the gpu is quite old now as imentioned either the gpu hitsink isnt attached properly anymore or you need to replace the thermal paste.better remove the gpu in order to check.. also touch the heatsing, at 70c it must be very hot.if it isnt then temperature isnt dissipating through heatsink! gtx460 can endure temps of 100c so if it stays below that isnt going to be damaged!

Scan for viruses and malware too, I've gotten viruses before from my friends stupid pirated games he made me install and it started bit mining on my GPU. Like already said, your GPU usage should sit around 0% at your desktop.

@mace200200: i have checked for viruses abd malware already, that doesnt seem to be the problem.
@chris987: i have downloaded the software, but sadly cant seem to figure out how to read it properly. also my GPU is the NVIDEA GeForce 460 GTX

open gpu z ,on the second tab it should state the temps and usage in % .! also open you tower and examine the gpu further! on desktop doing nothing expect 0% usage and temps on idle should be under 50c! also are you sure those numbers you read are on celsius?

ok i am on my desktop, just having the standart things running (steam client, waterfox and windows gadgets (GPU meter)) and its says
GPU Temperature 72.0 C -- and Fan Speed (%) 75% -- Memory used 230MB -- GPU Load 0% -- Memory Controller Load 0%-1% -- Video Engine Load 0%.
in my tower itself i cant seem to find anything wrong with the GPU itself, it's dust free and everything is connected just fine from the looks of it.
also as an update that might hint towards something, i have had no trouble playing games like World of Tanks and League of Legends, it's only the other two that i have mentioned before where i noticed the problem.
thank you for your support so far.

EDIT: I noticed that when I wake my PC, from sleep mode, that the GPU is at 50C and after 2 min its back to 70, this also happens when my screen saver (black screen) is on.

I will check the heat sink once I am home, but for the moment, I am guessing the GPU cuts out once it reaches 100C which is why I am getting the black screen when I play the games, so does that mean if it happens too often I need to replace the GPU? or would replacing it fix the problem?

ok so i have taken the GPU apart and cleaned it completely and reapplied the thermal paste, i will give an update in a few minutes to see whats happening, but currently its starting on 40C and 44% fan speed, the temp went up to 48C after starting all my programs but so far so good
