3.5 inch by 1.5 inch dark blue and light blue bordered box with a yellow bar and 100 to the right and the word Volume above the yellow bar. It cannot be moved or removed. Arrow cursor moves behind the box rather than over it. How do I remove it?

Solution
Could you post a screenshot of the taskmanager and of the box if it can be captured?. I want to see what suspicious process/program could be displaying the box. Have you scanned with the antivirus and/or antimalware? that would be the first thing to try. Also disable all startup processes in Start / Run / type: msconfig and press Enter / Startup tab and uncheck all but the antivirus. Next in the msconfig / Sevices tab / check the box to hide Windows Services and see what third party service is running that may be related to the box. You should also delete all Temp files from Start / Run / type: "%temp%", and again type "temp" to delete user and system temp files.. or install CCleaner to delete temp and junk files...
Is this the box?... the size doesn't match the box I see on my monitor, but maybe that depends on screen size and settings.

No. It's a white box with a blue border. Inside the white box is a yellow bar in the center showing 100 as percent of Volume. The word Volume is shown above the yellow bar inside the white box with blue borders.

Chicano, I did all you mentioned. No results. 2 other problems. Print screen does not work. Can not restart or shutdown computer going to Start Restart or Start Shut Down. The best I could do is copy the screen shot to files. It did not copy the volume box. This problem also is affecting my other computer and occurred at about the same time.

Well, that makes it almost certain it's a virus... if the antivirus and/or antimalware found nothing, try online virus scanns... and disable System Restore before scanning so the bugs won't have where to hide or save copies of themselfs. Also reset the default permissions with Subinacl following the instructions on the Winhelponline.com article, and apply all the suggestions you can from the thread linked below.

Chicano, both computers locked up and some functions don't work. I am lucky this second hard drive words on the second computer. I have ordered a new hard drive, a used processor and bios. I had ordered an oem windows 7 that says it's for system builders only. I don't know if I did the right thing. I want to install Microsoft Office 97 after getting Laplink Software to try to do it. What do you think?

Both computers affected by the virus, or by hardware damage?... OEM OS work the same as retail, so that isn't a problem.. and Laplink software is not necessary... if you know where personal data is stored in the old HDs, it's a matter of connecting them via USB and moving them to the new HD.. but you have to thoroughly scan the infected HDs to insure the virus is gone before it has the chance to infect even your new installations.
