Hi folks,

This isn't my first build, but my previous builds have been several years apart, so I'm still kind of noobish.

Anyway, my new box isn't booting up properly. The fans spin and my optical drive can open and close and sounds like it's spinning up, but there's no video, no beep, and no lights on the keyboard.

While installing the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, I used too much thermal paste like an idiot. A tiny strand of it got on the motherboard while I was trying to wipe it off. So I took it all apart, cleaned it with kimwipes and isopropanol, and reapplied it correctly. This was all before powering on for the first time. The paste that comes with that heatsink isn't supposed to be conductive, so that shouldn't have killed anything, right?

I've tried switching the RAM to all possible combinations recommended by the motherboard manual. The CMOS jumper is in the right place, and I've tried using it to clear the CMOS. The case audio is plugged in and the monitor was working with my last computer. I've tried re-seating the video card, which is appropriately plugged in to the power supply.

Any ideas? I'm going to RMA the motherboard if I don't find a fix soon.

Here are the build specs - everything was listed as compatible on pcpartpicker.

Thanks for your help!

check to see if it the newest version 5x of that mb or an older mb. if it an older rev of the motherboard it may need an updated bios file. if it version 5.0 check on the edge of the mb that the 4 or eight pin power plug is connected and the mb not shorting out.

It's version 5.2. And you're talking about the CPU circuit power plug, right? I just re-seated that with no change.

make sure the mb sitting on top off all the standoffs. check the io shield make sure it not shorting out the mb. if you have a volt meter read the voltage output on the power supply make sure there fine. check to see if the reset button smashed in or on the wrong pins. last test is to pull the mb from the case and try and boot it when it sitting on top of the mb box with the gpu and just the power supply.

Thanks for the advice! I can get into the BIOS when I pull it out of the case, so I guess the motherboard's good. That's a relief. It still doesn't beep, but I know why now... it's because my case doesn't have a speaker. I mistook the front audio connectors for the speaker. *head vs. wall*

But it still doesn't post in the case, even with all the non-essentials disconnected. The standoffs came already fixed in place, with one of those little nipples in the middle. I'll check the i/o shield next, but I have to sleep for now.

It was a standoff. I thought that they all came fixed in place since the case manual didn't mention them and they were too tight to remove by hand, but there was the one that I got out with pliers. beautiful beautiful setup screen.

Thanks again for your help!
