This RAM is not supported officially but I'd like to use it purely for the cool factor, what do you think?

It should work fine although not on the QVL list which is only a snapshot of what is available.

on crucials website those modules are listed as being fully compatible with 990fx chip sets. I had the same question when I bought my ram going from my x58 I think it was to my new X79 chipset for new ivry bridge-e. They may not update it right away on the website but they will 100% work with your motherboard. It just takes them a while to update the information on most websites.
