Hey all

I built a new machine about a month or two ago, replacing all my components apart from my PSU and case.

For a good while it worked without a hitch until one day I got a BSOD that broke my RAID0. After mourning the loss of my precious data (seriously guys, back it up if you're gonna rock a RAID0 set up) I decided to install an old HDD to take the place of my glorious 2TB RAID. I installed some games and got back into the action, TItanfall to be specific, but now when I play games or watch videos, and on occasion, when I am not doing much at all, it switches itself off with no warning.

My computer savvy friend popped round and we opened it up to see if the problem was obvious, checked the temp of both my CPU and GPU and found that they were running at perfectly cool temperatures. Then i figured "Oh it could be the new/old drive I installed" so i took it out and replaced it with the working half of my RAID, a 1TB WD cavier green HDD.

Continuing for a while I found that it still shuts down.

My set up is:

CPU - AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 8320 Black Edition 3.50GHz (Socket AM3+) Processor

GPU - Gigabyte GeForce GTX 760 WindForce 3x OC Rev2 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card **Black PCB**

MOBO - Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3 AMD 990FX (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard

RAM - Avexir Venom Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U16000904G-2CIG) - Green Light

HDD - 1 SSD - Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW)
- Above mentioned TB caviar, and another old 160gb drive.

PSU - Corsair CX600M 600W Modular 80 PLUS Certified 12V V2.3 ATX PSU - SLI Crossfire Ready

The PSU is the oldest part of the build, which i got about a year ago, apart from the case which is probably going on 7 years now.

Even though I know it to not be the heat of the CPU or GPU, when I have a window open, it seems to work for longer. Whether this is coincidence or integral to the problem, I don't know.

I know there is plenty of posts about inexplicable shut downs, but it seems it could be a multitude of different things and after scouring the web for 2 weeks, i figured it was time to ask for some help.

The only time that has happened to me it was the power supply. See if someone you know will let you borrow their power supply for a day. That's how I figured out the problem.

I don't get a BSOD

I just dismissed the PSU as I thought it would be a case of it either working or not working at all. Is it possible for the PSU to shut itself off as a precaution. I assumed it would just completely break rather than act like this.

With Memtest, do I need to burn it before I can run it? I've just moved house so I don't have a any discs here.

Also thanks for all the replies.

Oh sorry, yeah I realise that it may be unclear, I only got a BSOD when the RAID failed. Ever since then when the PC shuts itself down, it's instant with no warning at all.

I shall have another look inside and see if my PSU is clogged.
Thinking about it, the PSU was always fairly warm when I touched it afterwards. If it worked fine for a while would it mean that it is a fault rather than incompatible unit? I ask because it is still well under its warranty and I can't afford to get a new one, so replacing may be my only option.

Ok, I've grabbed my laptop now so I can do things a bit quicker. Should I completely take the mobo out?

Also as a side note, my theory was that it was one of the SATA ports. I figured after the BSOD that killed my RAID it may have affected the port and made it unreliable. Dunno if any of the science behind my theory makes sense, but it's the only thing that has changed. By the way, the PSU looks practically clear.
