Approximate Purchase Date: the closer the better

Budget Range: $300 - $500

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, gaming and occasional movies

Are you buying a monitor: Yes, most likely buying a 1080p 120hz or 144hz monitor

Parts to Upgrade: see below for a list of what I currently own.. I was hoping to spend about $300 to $500 to upgrade it to something that can handle the games I want to play

- Video Card: ASUS EAH5870/G/2DIS/1GD5/A Radeon HD 5870 (Cypress XT) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card w/ATI Eyefinity

CPU: Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor BX80601920

Hard drive: SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 ST1000DM005/HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive Bare Drive

RAM: G.SKILL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9T

Motherboard: ASUS P6T LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard

PSU: CORSAIR HX Series HX750 750W ATX12V 2.3 / EPS12V 2.91 SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Modular Active PFC Power Supply New 4th Gen CPU Certified Haswell Ready

Do you need to buy OS: No - Windows 7 Ultimate

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: newegg.com

Location: New Brunswick, NJ

Parts Preferences: not sure what I need to upgrade... I am already seeing sub 60fps performance on games like diablo 3. I played close beta for Wildstar and had everything on medium settings and the game stuttered quite a bit.. couldn't of been more than 30 to 40 fps on my 1200p monitor.

Overclocking: Maybe (never done it before but open to it)

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1200 or (thinking about getting a 1080p 120/144hz monitor soon)

Additional Comments
: (e.g.: Need to have a window and lots of bling, I would like a quiet PC. Please also list specific software or games you're using)

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: FPS seems to drop to fluctuate between 40 to 60 fps on diablo 3 and that I am having difficulty running Wildstar on medium setting.

Solution

The RAM is fine, and your CPU is sufficient. The problem with trying to upgrade your CPU is cost of CPU and motherboard.

I think your best bet is either a 770 and a nice CPU heat sink to get a good overclock, or maybe go all the way and spend all $500 and get a 780. Or you can just do a 770 and save some budget and get a bigger/better monitor :) lol

understood... how about I get an IPS 60hz monitor instead.

I just want to at least maximize it to steadily stay at 60 fps on a 1080p monitor and preferably at highest detail settings..

Does the monitor need to be included in your $500 budget? A good solution would be a GTX 770 or R9 280x if you can find one and the monitor. The 770 is perfect for 1080p.
