Hi all, this time I have another problem. After fixing my last build with a new mobo and now have it running, I would like to know what needs to be changed to get a better windows index score and faster framerate on games IE: Skyrim and Ultra settings.

My last build was a Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3ghz, 4gb ddr2 memory, 2tb Western Digital HDD, ATI RADEON HD6670 2gb and a ASUS P5K Mobo Windows Index Score 5.4, OS Windows 7 64bit.

My new build is,
GIGABYTE H87-HD3 Mobo, 750 watts PSU, ATI RADEON HD6670 DDR3 2GB, Intel i5 4670 CPU, 16GB Corsair Vengence DDR3, 2tb Western Digital HDD and OS Win 7 64bit Windows index score 5.9.

I have never understood the index score and why it only has gone up by point 5. Should I get another GFX card to run in crossfire mode as a purchase of a top spec card is now beyond me..

it is your hard drive what is letting you down

Processor 7.6,
Memory 7.6,
Graphics 6.8,
Gaming Graphics 6.8,
Primary Hard Disk 5.9

Would a smaller primary HDD be better and use the 2tb as a game storage..

Windows uses the lowest score as your index, my HDD gave me a low score. An SSD would be a better primary storage and the HDD as the game storage, an SSD will boot and make your score higher.

+1 for getting an ssd,but your wei is not something i would rely on to tell me how good my rig is.it is only to give you an idea and a vague one at that.simply because your hdd scores low doesnt mean it is massively affecting your overall performance.my score is 6.6-7.3-7.5-7.5-5.9,but im running really old hardware.phenom triple core 8650,hd4870 gpu and 4gb of ddr2 800mhz ram.your i5 will blow this out of the water but the scores dont seem to indicate that.i guess bottom line, what im saying is,pay little or no attention to the windows experience index score.

If you're looking for faster framerates on skyrim, the only thing you should upgrade would be your gpu. I would just save up money then to purchase at least a nVidia 750ti or AMD 260/260x. Your psu can handle any single graphics card so don't worry about that. In terms of gaming, your gpu is the only thing holding you back. I don't really recommend trying to buy another 6670 to use in crossfire (I don't even know if your mobo supports it).

Also, don't pay any attention to the Windows Experience Index - it is not that useful. However, I do agree that if you just want to raise your WEI, buy and SSD and make that your primary drive. However, even buying an SSD will have barely any impact on playing Skyrim or other games, as it pretty much only serves to decrease level loading times and not improve actual performance.

Yer my mobo is crossfire Enabled PCI Express 3.0.

Okay cool. So you do have the option of getting a second 6670. I still think it would be much better to buy a better single card. I recommend getting a gpu that costs around $150. You could even sell your current 6670 to offset some of the costs.

Don't stress about the WEI score. It's mostly meaningless. It supposed to be there to show your weakest component which is almost always the hard drive. I think 5.9 is the highest a spin drive can get. All sata III ssds are 7.9.

In my i7 build, my scores are
cpu - 7.7
RAM - 7.7
graphics - 6.9
gaming - 6.9
hdd - 7.9

My A10 HTPC ratings are

cpu - 7.6
RAM - 7.8
graphics - 6.9
gaming - 6.9
hdd - 7.9

My i7 is twice as fast as my A10 yet the score is only 0.1 different
My RAM in the A10 build is 2133mhz and the RAM in the i7 build is 1600mhz yet the difference is again 0.1

Overall my i7 build is way faster for all uses but gaming ironically.

Would this be any good,

Yes, that would work. I also recommend getting the 750ti if you're willing to spend a little more. It performs about 10% better.

If you are interested in running a 2-card set-up down the road, buy the 260x.

WEI is a garbage benchmark for your PC. A computer that's five years old or better could score just as good as a desktop built today. I wouldn't even give it the time of day if I were you.
