I can't get a test beep when I start my computer.

I've completed my external build, plugged in the test speaker to the proper socket on the motherboard, but when I start the computer, I don't get a startup beep and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. My motherboard is an Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 and it has onboard sound, so I don't have a sound card, if that makes a difference. Also, the monitor I was going to use isn't compatible with the graphics card so I don't have a monitor attached to the motherboard, but I would think that shouldn't change the test beep. The motherboard runs fine, and all of my fans turn on when I power up.

That motherboard SHOULD give you one beep (according to Asus), more beeps tell you what is wrong, no beeps. . .
You may be best off waiting for a monitor to see if it shows anything. (why isn't your monitor compatible, most cards support most monitors)

I figured out the beep problem, I didn't have my supplemental CPU power attached. As far as the monitor goes, it's an older emachine monitor, and the input says VGA on it. My graphics card (Asus GEFORCE GTX 660) has an output that says VGA under it, and then it also says DVI-I, but the cord obviously doesn't fit into the graphics card, while it does fit into the monitor.
