Very high GPU temps. Is the card faulty?

Hi,

I received a MSI R9 290X Lightning today and very worried about the temps. At idle with a single screen the temp is 40C, with 2 displays its 46C and if I run Kombuster from Afterburner temps hit 85C before I close the program!

Surely this has to be a faulty card, or have I set it up wrong? I certainly haven't experienced these issue with previous GPUs.

Solution
Get a 780 ti. It's also hot, but not as bad, and it won't throttle. It's also a tad bit faster (usually) and much quieter.

Benchmarks tend to use the GPU more than any real-life scenario would. Find some reference temperatures to compare yours too. Maybe look at reviews for your card as they usually have a temperature section. Depending on the benchmark 85C might still be within reasonable limits. The 290x series gets incredibly hot. Doesn't mean it is dangerous if they are build to take that kind of heat.

Agreed. I knew the 290X ran hot. However most reviews state the Lightning idles at 30C and hits 70C max under full load.

When I ran Kombuster the temps hit 85C in seconds so I quickly closed the program.

I cannot accept that this is normal!

I understand the difference in loads. The 70C quoted in most reviews is using Unigine heaven, or 3DMark benchmarking software.

My case cooling is also fine. My previous cards never went above 70-75C.

When using a GPU burn benchmark like they have in Konbustor and various other software it works your gpu to its limits. My GTX 780 Classified hit 85c and held when I ran the GPU burn in my EVGA software. The 290's are known for running hot but in this case you were still within reasonable temps. when it hits the 90's than keep and eye on it.

Have done some further testing.

If I have a single website open and it happens to be YouTube the card LED goes red, the core clock and memory hit full speed and the temp goes up to 60c.

Also ran Unigine Heaven and the card was throttling all over the place and hit 94c.

As I've said before, max temps any reviews has received is 75 ish so in my opinion there's definitely something wrong with the card!

Well, looks like you have answered the question yourself.
