I am looking to build a PC for the first time. I would really appreciate some advice on what to put in the tower since I don't have a whole lot of experience with the component side of PCs.

Approximate Purchase Date: Some time in the near future

Budget Range: $850 Before Rebates; After Shipping

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming, surfing, light random home usage

Are you buying a monitor: No

Do you need to buy OS: Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: Any really

Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Parts Preferences: by brand or type (e.g.: I would like to upgrade to Intel CPU)

Overclocking: No

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080

Additional Comments: If it could be relatively quiet then that would be great. I am not looking for it to be silent, just not a jet engine.

This would be very quiet

Is there a big difference between the Radeon R9 270X and the 270? I ask because the 270X is on backorder at Vuugo and its next cheapest option is Newegg @ $300 while I can get the 270 for $215.

The R9 270 and R9 270x are essentially the same GPU, except the 270 is binned lower and clocked lower. Generally, people have had success getting the 270 to overclock up to 270x levels, or close to it, so that would be a good option :) Even if you aren't able to overclock it all the way to 270x levels, the performance difference will be minimal.

Awesome :) Also, if I could manage to scrounge up the extra cash would it be worth it to bump the CPU from an i3 to an i5?

The bump up to the i5 would definitely be worth it. You'll notice less frame rate drops in CPU-heavy games (like BF4, DayZ, etc.) with an i5, as well as having the CPU last longer. The i5-4440 is usually a pretty good price, and would fit with everything in the build I have. If you can scrounge it together, I would definitely do that :)
