I have a server T300 Dell, it supports up to 5300P, If I use 6400, can it downgrade automatically? Also P should be the same as E , they both stand for ECC correct?

Thanks

Theoretically, any higher speed memory when installed with a lower speed memoryshould downclock automatically, sometimes the BIOS will do it even if the memory are of the same speed. For this server, Dell and every other retailers recommend only upto 667MHz which means 6400 will not work in most cases but in rare case you can get it to work. Manual states - "Memory modules must be PC2-4200/5300 compliant for your system."

Yes, "P" stands for parity and "E" stands for ECC which is one and the same.

If you need any memory recommendations I may be of help to you. Good luck! :sourire:

I didn't mean to be rude with my earlier reply.

Yes, with the motherboards you can find all the details only if the server is using Tyan or SuperMicro or other brand server boards. But Dell, HP etc have their own motherboards for their systems. HP have motherboards made by Foxconn but Foxconn doesn't have those in their support site, so going by motherboard will be of no help when it comes to servers like HP, Dell, Sun and Cisco too. Correct me if i'm wrong.
