Hi, I have tried searching for my answer on here but I don't seem to understand alot of the terms used - so forgive me if you end up reiterating info.

I have a HP laptop that I bough brand new two years ago ... everytime it turns on there is a message about the battery needing replacement.

I've heard that I can reset the battery myself ... how do i do this?

My friend had hers done, it was a different brand of laptop and from what i can gather the computer guy held down the power button ... but im not quite sure what to do from here?

Step-by-step instructions would be amazing!

Cheers
Kim!

to reset the battery you need to just let it die and then charge back up to a 100% that will re-calibrate everything.
However, if your battery is actually about to die there is a very good chance that doing that will finish killing the battery

A laptop battery is only good for up to several hundred charge/discharge cycles. Two years of life is a little short, but not too unusual depending on your usage patterns.
You can buy cheap batteries online (e.g. EBay) that will work, but may not last more than a year. Or, you can go to a well-known source like BatteriesPlus (who sells Ray-O-Vac), and pay more, but get a battery likely to last for years.

OTOH, if this is referring to the CMOS battery inside your laptop, this is typically a custom part that must be ordered from HP. Their web site includes service manuals with diagrams and instructions. If you do not feel comfortable with this process, even the guys at Geek Squad or a major office supply chain should be sufficiently competent to replace this little battery.

im not entirely sure what the battery life is, it doesn't go off straight away .. it will last a while but not half as long as it did. So as my batt is not on its last legs shall I drain it and charge it back up? Will this work?
Thanks!

All that will do is fix any issues with the time remaining etc. Sounds like your battery is pretty rough so the most it will do is stretch the battery out a little longer before it gives up completely.
