Or triopoly if you add linux. I mean, these companies like Codemasters, Atari and Naughty Dog all started as just two guys in a bedroom just tinkering.

From the little I remember about Mac OS, that was two guys (Jobs and Wosniak) again, tinkering. Who's to say it couldn't happen, one day.

This applies to all the OSes out there so wasn't sure where to put it

How successful would people be anyway, bringing in their own hardware and OS (like the current mac model) or is it monopoly for life!!!

Google and their Android platform. It is based on Linux but significantly different to be considered as another os. So yeah there are a lot of other os out there.
But why would someone want to build another os out from scratch? Its a lot of hard work that requires some very smart people when they could just modify an open source kernal/os like linux to suit them.

Not going to argue with you there, but it must be awesome to say, 'yeah, I built/coded that'

The better question is there someone that can top Windows? Highly doubtful but there's OS's that are making its way to the market so we'll see. Windows has many years, developers behind it and the general default OS to use, that's the main reason Windows has done so well to stay on top.

Al those years of experience and it still takes 40 seconds at the welcome screen :D :p, probably a reflection on my decision to use all mechanical drives than anything else

I reckon somebody could compete, maybe not have a huge market share, but gain traction using Apple's model. The problem would probably be getting that initial traction and Apple :p, but at the very least inroads could be made with a bit of luck

As long as OEM is going to bundle windows with computer by default, it is not going anywhere. Windows is still an excellent operating system especially for the non tech savvy masses that is out there. Those that just need a computer to surf web, watch movie and play games. As the saying goes, no need to fix something that isn't broken.

Gaming as well, Linux and Apple are catching up but still not quite there yet. It would be very hard to beat Microsoft with the existing driver support and directx.

Linux my experience is the learning curve is a bit difficult for beginners. Andriod would probably have the best chance out of all the variants, maybe steamos. Apple is too exclusive for it to be more widespread then it is now.

Funny my win7 report only 15-40s for resume time from hibernation and that is with upwards of 8gb of ram in use that need to be read from disk. So yeah SSD are great

No, they never will.

Many operating systems are just iterations of products that came before them. All major operating systems, with the exception of Windows NT, can trace significant portions of their codebases back over 30 years.

OSX and iOS are simply proprietary graphical frontends to the Darwin OS, which is derived from NEXTSTEP and FreeBSD, which are themselves derived from Unix version 7.

The Mac OS that Apple used prior to OSX is completely dead.

Linux as we know it is a kernel that has been under constant development for over 20 years. It's often packaged with various free software that itself has been around for decades such as the GNU project, or compilations of new and old software such as Android.

In order for a product to challenge Windows, much less topple Windows it would first have to be competitive with Windows and Microsoft has a 25 year head start over any new studio.

As long as vendors insist on repackaging Linux or various Unicies rather than create something new (which won't happen for a ton of reasons) Windows will continue to stand out as the consumer OS of choice.
