Cannot boot on old HDD after removing SSD

A couple of days ago I decided to upgrade to a Samsung 840 Pro SSD (256GB) for programs and boot, keeping my 1tb HDD for anything that wouldn't need the extra speed (I'm running windows 8 btw). I followed a guide to install the SSD without a having to clean install windows. I backed up my entire computer contents to an external drive, deleted everything I didn't want on the SSD off of the HDD, and then cloned the HDD onto the SSD. This all worked out fine, and I was later able to move my other files back onto the HDD. After all this, I found the performance of my computer wasn't improved enough to warrant the money I spent on the new drive, so I tried to restore the back up of my original computer contents onto my old HDD and remove the SSD. I changed my bios back to how they were before the installation, but my computer will not boot without the SSD installed. Does anyone know a solution for this or have a suggestion why the performance of my SSD was not as I had expected?
Any and all help is appreciated.

and then cloned the HDD onto the SSD
Everything software related that was somewhat wrong with the original install on the HDD is now replicated on the SSD.

This is why I rarely recommend cloning from a HDD to a new SSD. You're just bringing along old crap.
A clean install on the SSD will cure your woes.
