System occasionally failed to POST for about a week; now, it doesn't POST at all; red CPU light; some solutions attempted

Let me start off by saying I've attempted several of the solutions in the "No POST mega-thread," and I'm holding off on the more extreme solutions until I know what's going on.

I'd also like to state that this is my first build, and while I was assisted by a more experience builder, I could have easily screwed up some part of the assembly.

I built the machine about a week and a half ago. It would only boot up sometimes. Often, I'd turn it on, and the red CPU light would turn on. After about an hour, I'd power it on again, and it would work fine. All my components ran at a decent temperature, the hottest being the CPU around 40º C.

My build:
AMD FX-8350 CPU @ 4.0 GHz
ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 motherboard
G.SKILL RIPJAWZ DDR3 8GB (2x4 GB) RAM
Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition (2 GB GDDR5) video card
OCZ 650W power supply

I attempted a BIOS update a few days ago, but that didn't change anything; the issue persisted.

Yesterday, I opened the case, and unplugged/replugged the 8-pin CPU power cable. When I turned it on, it booted on the first try. I assumed the issue had been solved.

Today, I turned it on, and the red CPU light turned on again. I attempted about 20 minutes afterward, and the issue persisted. It does not POST at all now. I tried booting it with each stick of RAM individually, and that caused the DRAM_LED to blink red occasionally. I tried the DirectKey button, and that merely shut the machine down (as opposed to rebooting into BIOS). The motherboard ATX power connector seemed secure.

The CPU was brand new at the time of building, and the motherboard had been recently replaced by the manufacturer.

One hunch I've had about the issue is that the pointy things on the end of my CPU cooler (Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO) seem not to fit in the case. When I close the case, I worry that the case panel is pushing back on the CPU cooler, putting undesired pressure on the CPU/socket.

I have yet to try a CMOS clearing/USB BIOS flashback because I'm still a little nervous about that (my first motherboard broke after a BIOS update).

Solution
You certainly don't want the case lid pushing on the CPU cooler. If it pushes hard enough you'll break your mobo. Try booting without the case lid on. You might need to RMA your mobo.

I tried booting without the case lid, but that was only after it had failed completely. I think you may be right, but I'm going to look at other solutions first.

Do you think this is the primary source of the problem? If so, is there any way I can file down the points on the cooler so it'll fit in the case in the future?

Also, I did not mean to mark this as the best solution. Is there a way to undo this?
