My WD external hd is no longer recognized or listed under my computer. It was working perfectly for at least a year. The light flashes and there is a soft hum. When I use the switch on the back to turn it on, the computer makes the 'bing, bing' noise as usual. When I press and hold the switch to shut it off, the computer makes the 'bing, bong' noise. So it seems it is working and the computer is picking it up. However, it does not come up under the 'my computer' window. Under device manager a usb mass storage device is listed. This does not get me anywhere. I already tried a new usb cable with no results. I tried it with my laptop, where i normally use it with the same problem. I tried hooking it up to a hardly used PC and that computer found a new hardware wizard which ran to finish, but the WD was not listed in the 'my computer' window either. Is there a fix for this? It seems odd the computer makes noises like it knows it's there but does not list it. Thanks for any help.
