yes my suggestion is for the machine listed.i think you will be pleasantly surprised with win7,i know i was and i was a hardcore xp guy.with a 64 bit version of win7 you will be able to max out your ram at 18gb,but i think 8 is all you really need.
unless your running a 64bit version of xp you are limited to about 3.5gb of ram.the 32 bit version wont see any more than that.that having been said windows 7 64bit would be something to think about because,as you know, support is done this april for xp. but even a 64bit version of xp (which is buggy and hard to find drivers for) will still be limited by your hardware,ie processor.my advice is to go to windows 7 64bit and 8gb of ram.

Many thanks for the replies.

I am using XP SP3 32 so it looks like I am unable to upgrade my RAM as I already have 4GB. Shame as i love XP and all my programs work on it well. Still, I guess we all have to move on upward as they say !! :)

I will look at Win7 64bit and 8 GB RAM

I assume you suggest that for the machine I have listed the specs for.

Yes, I'm sorry but it is an Asus mobo not Gigabyte as I said.

Thanks again

oz

Thanks Tradesman1.
Strangely enough I read that post at 16Gb anyway..
I am thinking of getting Win7 Pro with that same machine which CPU-Z shows it can use 64bit..
Instructions sets MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, EM64T, VT-x
I

I have 2 sticks of 2Gb in it at the moment but want to get it up to 16Gb. If I got 2 sticks of 8 would that work, even if I kept the current 4Gb in?
Thanks again
oz

Added edit: Also see that there are 2 ram types 1600 and 1866. How do I check which I should get please?

Thank you guys for the always great help..

Out today to go with the 4 x 4GB DDR3 and Win7 64bit. Got a good price on Kingston 4GBx4 1600 kit.

Have also decided on a SSD drive to place this win7 on.
I have also got good price on a Kingston Hyper X SSD 120GB so will go for that I think.

I will put my video editing and multi track audio progs on the ssd so that should give me a better performance that my XP Pro, 500GB HD, 4GB RAM.
