Why would you need a calibration tool? Why not just use your eyes?

I've seen mention of calibration tools for setting a TV's/monitor's colour settings.

They cost something like $100. Why wouldn't a person simply use their own eyes to get the settings right. That's what I've done all my life and I've been happy with the results.

What am I missing?

Never heard of a paid calibration tool - most TVs/monitors just use a couple of screens to allow the user to set the correct colour and contrast for his/her preference.

well your not missing $100 thats for sure.ive never used one,just set it up with whatever utility it came with and my eyes.im happy with the results as well.

Calibration tools needed for professional photo designers because some monitors have bad factory calibration and after professional calibration monitor shows significantly better, aslo most of times calibration needed on IPS monitors http://www.imaging-resource.com/ARTS/MONCAL/CALIBRATE.HTM
