"Kernel" issue when trying to back up

Went to backup my hard drive today, but got the blue screen of death when I plugged in my Simpletech 1TB external drive. System rebooted before I had a chance to take a screen shot to detail the message. Ideas?

I've had/used this drive for a few years, with no prior issues. I was able to backup after the restart, but I don't trust it now.

It's probably not the drive at fault - a failure to properly deal with an external device is a common cause of blue screens

You've run a full virus check and malware check? If not that would be worth doing, on your PC first, then on the external drive as well

As I said, I've been using this device for years, without problem. I have Norton and Malwarebytes always on guard, and my system is clean. So I'm looking for other suggestions.
