Can anyone reccomend anything else that will yield better performance but at the same £600 budget?

Solution

Well you're a little under budget there. Personally I'd go for an AMD FX6300 on socket AM3+ (the motherboard you should be able to get for same price, Ebuyer has that CPU for approximately £80). The FX has level 3 cache and 2 more cores than the FM2 based chip you have there.

Alternatively for similar money you could get an Intel i3 4130 which should perform similar in games and has the upgrade path to the more powerful i5 and i7 chips.

Don't get me wrong that's not a bad set-up, it's just there is little upgrade path above that processor whereas with AM3+ you can go up to the 8 core 9570, and with the intel 1150 socket you have up to the quad core / 8 thread i7 4770k.

Yeah you need to get a good PSU- main rules are:
80+ Bronze Certified and a SINGLE 12V rail (manufacturers produce high wattage PSU with cheap bits by providing several low current 12V rails to make the supply look better than it is).

Something like this should handle 2 x R9 270X cards:

For just one 270X the cosair CX500 would be fine as it's much cheaper but you need at least the 650 for 2 cards I think.

Yeah you're right there- it would probably be better to get a bigger case and a full ATX board if you want to go Crossfire in the future (as even *if* you find an mATX board that's compatible 9 times out of 10 the small case will mean that the bottom slot is only single width and you won't find a single slot R9 270X.
