Computer Specs:

Windows XP Professional 32-bit
Dell Optiplex 3010 ~ Core i5
Western Digital 250GB Hard Drive

Issue:

I was given this computer to fix; however, I have no idea when or how the problem started because it was previously in an office setting where many people used it, so details are vague on how this error came to be.

When I try to boot up the computer everything is normal through the WinXP splash screen. After the splash screen, a blue screen pops up with the following error:

STOP: c0000139 {Entry Point Not Found}
The procedure entry point RegisterWaitForInput could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

I then tried to boot into Safe Mode, but I get the same error. So my next step was to boot from the WinXP install disk and run the Recovery Console. I performed chkdsk /r and it found and fixed a few errors. I tried to boot normally again, but I still got the same error.

At this point, I'm stuck. I would prefer not to have to completely re-install Windows if possible since it's not my computer, but I will do it if absolutely necessary. I am able to access all the files on the hard drive via a SATA to USB adapter.

The only other thing that I noticed could be wrong is that in the registry there are two Windows Updates (KB2758857 and KB959426). The first update uses kernel32.dll (v 5.1.2600.6293), and the second update uses kernel32.dll (v 5.1.2600.5781). And the kernel32.dll that is in C:\windows\system32 is version v 5.1.2600.6293. Not sure if this could be causing the problem or not, but I just wanted to through it out there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I copied over Kernel32.dll from the original XP CD in recovery console, but I still have the same error.

Also, I uninstalled those two updates (KB2758857 and KB959426) in recovery console, and that didn't change anything either

I did find some recovery points on the disk and in order to to use them, I had to move all the files manually since I can't boot up the computer. I tried doing this, and when I booted up the computer it restarted itself 3 times, and them on the 4th time the same error occurred.
