Hello Everyone !

We need to build a new server for our business. The server will be hosting around 2 - 4 Tb worth of office information such as Quick Books , excel , Microsoft word and other project files. The server will be mapped to around 25 computers and also will be connected with over 10 printers. We will mostly be using it as a file server , mail server, printer server and have active directory installed.

Here is the break down. Our Budget Is $2800 for the Motherboard , Ram , Hard drives , CPU , Raid controller card. We already have the rest of the parts which we have purchased brand new.

We are looking for a Server Motherboard , 32Gb ECC Memory , 2 hard drives for raid 1 support , Quad or Hex core Intel CPU , and a raid controller card.

We don't have room for a rack mount so we have to keep this in a Full tower Atx Case if possible. We also want to purchase everything from Newegg or Amazon if possible.

As of now these are the parts we are looking at

Haven't looked at a controller card yet hopefully u guys can help us with that and put all these in our $2800 budget.

We're trying to set this up ASAP. Please let me know what you guys think. Any feedback or recommendations are appreciated thanks for the help !

You know, the whole idea of building your own server for your business is not a good idea. You really should look at one of the servers from Dell/HP. Check out the whole thread in "Planning for Virtualization using Hyper-V and Hyper-V Replicas with Win2012 R2 Guests" for more info on the reasons why it's not a great idea.

P.S. Your budget of $2800 is enough to get a server from Dell/HP with the specs you want.

With the spec you provided, this server can be built for about $2,000, we even upgraded it to a DUAL Xeon E5 + two 4TB HDD set up
The same exact set up would cost $3,800 and up from dell.

* DUAL Xeon E5-2609 v2 3rd Gen Six core - 12 threads 2.5Ghz Ivy bridge ( 30% faster than the old 2nd gen Sandy E5-2620 v1 you were looking )
* Supermicro Superserver Board X9DRi-F DUAL socket 2011 with 2x iIntelĀ® i350 giga lan + 1x IPMI remote control lan port
* Lian-Li Ultra Light Full Alluminum workstation chassis
* 2x 4TB Seagate enterprise HDD or 2x 4TB WD Black Drives
* 16GB DDR3 ECC PC1600 Ram
* The on board raid this server board comes with is more than enough for 2-4 HDDs, saving the money for the 2nd processor is more cost effective.
* 3 years hardware warranty parts and labor , ( 5 years manufacturer warranty for the HDDs )

You can send me an email if you have questions for me.

The Xeon E5-2609 is a quad-core non hyper-thread processor only, however. So the above system, with dual Xeon E5-2609 would be dual-quad core with total of eight threads. While definitely doable and you get more physical cores, it is more efficient (and cost effective) to run a single E5-2620 V2 six-core hyperthreaded processor instead unless you need the additional dual-socket capabilities and slight increased clock speed.
