So I am currently building a gaming rig, and this is my first time. I have not started yet, so I haven't bought any parts, but I do have a plan in mind, so what do you think of this build from a price/performance standpoint, and are there any parts I could adjust for better pricing, quality, or compatibility?

Overall, quite a good build. Why Ivy bridge processor though apart from better overclocking capabilities? The new Haswell supports the new chipset and has a performance increase over the ivy bridge. The GPU is still running good FPS at 1080p gaming.

What exactly are haswell cpus? Like what are examples of the 4th gen ones? Are you saying I should go for an i7? I'm sorry for sounding dumb but I'm pretty new to this stuff.

Haswell are 4th generation processor from Intel. They are the newest CPUs from Intel. For example; Intel i5 4670k & Intel i7 4770k. Basically, you want to get a i5 if you want to just game. i7 can be used to do rendering images and videos and heavy editing. As you just want to game, you can with the i5.

Well I changed the build up to look like this
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/L42cf/saved/4fsy

I added the Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor
and
ASRock Z87M Extreme4 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard

Are these good?
And I don't think I'll want an i7, the extra $100 would put my system's price range a bit out of comfort zone

Ok that seems to be good now. The mATX has similar features to a ATX motherboard but has less expansion slots but it will perfectly fine. It will do it's job and ASrock seem to be trusted brand.

If you did want to go for an ATX motherboard, MSI G45 motherboard doesn't seem to be that bad. I have one and it seems to reliable!
