Windows 8.1 vs. 7 for gaming and performance?

I'm building a new PC for livestreaming and gaming and I'm also a huge performance freak. I need help deciding which OS to get either Windows 8.1 or 7 not sure 7 is better for a lot of personal stuff and editing/modifying things while on the other hand (not sure if this is true) 8.1 apparently has better performance with programs and is better for gaming? Help me out let me know quick!

go for windows 8.1 x64 as it is directx 11.1 capable hence enhancing and smoothening ur gaming performance squeezing the best out of ur graphics card.... also it will give u xtra 5-10 boost in fps in games like bf4..... hope this helps

WINDOWS 8.1 IS COMPLETE IS MESSED UP ALOT OF HIDDDEN BUGS MANY GAMES WONT RUN STEAM/NON-STEAM WASTED VERY MUCH MONEY BUT ITS STUPID:no::fou::kaola:

Well for me, Windows 8.1 Is better but there are some problems or bugs using windows 8.1 and there are some problems too in windows 7 like HITMAN ABSOLUTION, The game won't run on Windows 7 if it don't have any Service Pack 1 so you'll need to download it first while Windows 8.1 doesn't need Service Pack 1 it can run games smoothly and perfectly than windows 7. So if i were you i will choose Windows 8.1 even it have bugs but only little than windows 7. Best OS Windows XP SP3. :)

From my tests, on the same system running Win 7(with all updates), and win 8.1(all updates) the performance is 3-10 fps lower in 8.1(so close to the margin of error that its not really a consideration for games running at 150 fps)

Guy who was talking about SP1 on win 7, service packs are just large collections of updates made for easyer install, in windows 8 thing were so bad they went for a version number addition instead of releasing a service pack, I had no problems running any of the games in windows 7

bf4 had sound issues untill I did a cfg file tweak in win8.1
NFSW wouldn't play nice with my controller in windows 8.1, had to do a reg edit

games tested at 1080p max settings (Brackets for win8):
BF4: 189(183)max 89 min, 149(144) avg
Hitman absolution: 123(120) max, 73 min, 97(95) avg
NFSW: 219 min, 670(650) max, 312(310) avg


Background o me: Being a builder o custom computers, someone who laughs at stickers that say "no user serviceable parts inside", such as replacing TVS diodes that are blown on hard drives that died to power faults, and etc, also having the ability to remove viruses without the use of a virus scanner, an avid tinker, my router is home built and has more oomf than the average persons computer

actualy i tried win 7 and win 8.1 pro and played the same game which is far cry 4 on both of them and the difference was huge on win7 i played it in medium and it's lagging even with my amd radeon r9 295x2 crossfire but with win 8.1 pro it runs freaking awossome in ultra setting and i've got from 65 to 90 fps

The angry responses here are partially true.

I did Windows 8.1 to try it out. Older .NET Frameworks are disabled, older DirectX .dlls are not included and the recommended DXSETUP from Microsoft does not work, I had to get a redistributable.

Several Steam games are still broken and some older titles don't work. I'm wiping my machine a second time in two days and going back to Windows 7.

I tried Windows 8 last year and it was worse. I will be sticking to Windows 7 as long as it is supported. This is the next Vista.

You guys do realize that in Windows 8.1 64-bit you can right click on any program's ICON and choose "properties" at the bottom and then click the "compatibility" tab, then click the check box under "Compatibility mode" and select what OS the program is compatible with, right? The list runs from Win 95 all the way to Win 7 and Win 8.

its very easy to enable older .net framework through Programs And Features.
Windows 8.1 has never given me an issue with DirectX, only if you run the N versions that do not include Media Center options. any game you're installing includes it's needed directx version anyway.
have had no trouble with any Steam application. have about 12 games installed and have demo'd 50+.
have never had BSOD in over a year of use, unlike Windows 7 where it was just normal 1 or 2x a week.
though i do like some things about 7 better, 8.1 is a more stable and better optimized OS. i miss some of the Start Menu options but became accustomed to the Metro Screen quickly and have it customized to offer more than the Start Menu could. 8.1 also takes some searching to find all the Windows options you will probably want to customize, but most are there. i do really miss being able to customize folder options like menu width, window border sizes, etc. but 8.1 has found a good middle that doesn't really need much changing.

i havent seen a release date yet for Windows 10 but if you're are planning on buying Windows I would wait for it and DirectX12.

I agree! I have 4 computers in my office. All windows 8 (or 8.1) always seem to fail in one or other thing. So I rather buy cheap windows 7 licences and use them. In theory W8 is suppose to be better but not in reallity.

IMPORTANT!!! If you are going to buy Windows 7, MAKE SURE IS THE PRO EDITION!! because premium has a 16 GB of ram use limit, basic and starter wont let you play well (8 GB ram limit)

Windows 8.1 is better than Windows 7 in many ways, security being one of the important improvements, but Windows 7 does works better for some for various reasons, usually software related. Currently, however, there is a free upgrade to Windows 10 from either 7 or 8.1, and that is something you might want to look into.

The amount of RAM one can use with Windows 7 does, as you mentioned, depends on the specific version of Win 7 one uses (Win 7 Premium x64 is limited to only 16GB). The same is true of Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, but without the tight limitations of Windows 7. Their RAM limitations are far more generous:

Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are limited to 128GB on x64, while
Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 Enterprise and Professional are limited to 512GB

All x86 (32-bit) versions of Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 are limited to just 4GB.

For gaming, Windows 8.1 has DirectX 11 support while Windows 10 has DirectX 12, which has been said to be twice as powerful as 11.
