CPU air fan or closed loop prefab water cooling

My build so far:
Case - Carbide 500R (no top fans)
Mobo - Gigabyte z87x udh4
ram - 8 (2x4) gskill
psu- hx850
cpu- haswell i6-4670k
gpu - palit gtx 780

I had planned on getting a CM Hyper 212 Evo however, it:s out of stock from Amazon here in Japan.

So now I:m thinking of cancelling my order and getting either a different air cooler or a closed loop water cooler.

After some more reading, I:ve found that water cooler pose less stress on the mobo during transit and considering I:m going to be moving back to the US in a year or two, I:ve been taking that into consideration. Also, summer is coming up and it gets real hot here in Japan considering there:s no central air and I don:t like to leave my room AC on when I:m not in. Finally, I do plan to do some OCing down the line.

So my question is, should I go water cooling or is air cooling still more viable?

  1. Xigmatek Gaia is very comparable to the 212 EVO.

    It really depends on your budget. If the budget it anything below $110, then air cooling is by far the best choice. Take a look at the NH-D14. Go to rolli59s suggestion if your budget is in the pricerange of the Hyper 212 EVO.

    (as for travel, you might want to just take the cooler off the CPU. I've never had to test moving a case that had a big cooler in it, but it couldn't hurt to leave it off during the trip)
  3. Thanks both of you for your answers. Currently the Gaia 2 is ~45$, NH-D14 ~170$, while the Corsair H-series (75, 80i, 90, 100i, 110) are funnily enough all around the same price of 100$ with the h60 ~75$. That's about as much as I could find for water cooling on Amazon.jp

    Roughly 100$ is ok but the asking price for the NH-D14 is a certainly about what I'd like to spend. Any recommendations?

    Correction the H110 is at 145$ which is still more than I'd like to pay.
  4. You can't get a water cooler in this price range that beats the NH-D14. It's what I would get. Just to be sure, measure the dimensions of your case and RAM. The heatsink is rather large :P
  5. It is all a matter of how high you are going to overclock. Mild to moderate The Gaia max the NH D14.
  6. Hello, thanks for more info. Since I've been researching all morning, I ended up coming across these comparisons on various cpu coolers:

    Admittedly, the first is a bit dated and uses a different cpu. And the second I have no idea what build they used for the answers. However, it seems at the H80-100 the performance compared to the NHD14 is competitive while costing 70$. Am I missing something? Sorry, this is my first build and I'm still very new to this XD
  7. The H100i actually performs similarly to the NH-D14 (as what you linked shows). I've seen tests ranging from the Noctua cooler beating the Corsair, and also the other way around. I've come to assume that they have very similar performance. The dealbreaker for me is a) price and b) the fact that air coolers also help cool the VRMs on the motherboard (which is a great thing when overclocking). I would always go for the NH-D14 over any closed loop water cooler.
  8. Looking around, the VRM on my board is all digital and the Haswell series chips have the VRM integrated into them.... Honestly, I've never overclocked before, and so some of this is new and not part of the initial process when I was looking for a CPU cooler. Since there is no physical VRM component on the motherboard because it got moved to the cpu, does that mean in my case it is not as big a deal breaker?

    The Voltage Regulator Module is a physical thing. What motherboard do you have?
