Using external for steam games

Yes i have a 160gb external hard drive set up and i was wondering if installing my steam games on it would be a good idea? would i lag in my games more or what is the draw backs from using an external for games?

I think that only applies when you record gameplay since streaming just sends the data to Twitch etc whereas recording saves it on your HDD while you use the same HDD to load content to the game.
