A10-7700k overheating at idle

Using stock heat sink and fan, the bios is reporting temps up to 70C at idle. I have re-applied the Arctic Silver 5 several times and reseated but the CPU is larger than the base of the stock heat sink. I did also touch the heat sink to make sure the numbers were right and it was hot as hell to the hand thermometer. Case cooling is not the issue, I opened the case and pointed a coolermaster 12cm fan right at it and it dropped the temp by a whole degree. Also, this case, fans, and PSU ran the previous Athlon 2 XII 245 without issue. Bios is reporting correct bus, multiplier and voltages everywhere. Motherboard, CPU, and RAM are all brand new. I do have another cooler (Logisys BETA 400 ST) that will be delivered tomorrow, but I feel as though the CPU should not be even close to this hot.

Should I RMA the CPU?

That seams odd- I'm assuming you've installed the cooler that came with the 7700k (and not the old Athlon 2)?

A quick question- looking at the info for the motherboard on the ASRock website, it states that the 7700K is only support with a bios update, did you update the bios before installing the new cpu? If not I'd put the Athlon 2 back in and update it as running a cpu in a board that doesn't properly support it can have strange side effects like this...

Update: Link to the ASRock cpu support list- option to update bios is at the bottom of the page:

His old Athlon II isn't compatible with his motherboard as that was an AM3 chip. ;) . OP, you could pick up an aftermarket heatsink like a hyper TX3. The stock heatsink is horrible. What were your intentions for this system?

I did not update the bios, but I am running the cooler for the 7700. The Athlon is a different socket and will not work, however this bios will update from the internet without booting, so as long it doesn't take 10 mins, I should be able to update before it overheats. Will try this when I get home. Thanks. I can't believe that I didn't see that "since bios" on the site. I'll post back after update.

Lol oops, yeah didn't notice that! I was thinking of the new FM2 Athlon chips like the 760K.

Agreed a nice after market cooler would be good- however I don't think the chip should heat up that much on idle even with the stock coolers (I know they're poor but they usually work at stock settings!).

I know the bundled cooler with the 760k has similar issues to what the OP is having with his 7700k. Chances are, it is the same cooler.

I have space constraints, that is why I ordered the smaller replacement heat sink. I will watch HD movies and do some video processing for streaming. May play a game here and there but not much, I generally use the PS3 for that ;-)

The TX3 is fairly small. There are some more lower profile solutions out there though. If your case supports a 120mm fan, an all in one liquid cooler like the Coolermaster Seidon 120xl is an option too.

The TX3 is way too tall. I have 3.5 in of clearance. The 400 ST I ordered has a 92mm fan, a copper base and 4 heat pipes. Is that not enough for a non-overclocked CPU? Also, there is not room for a 12cm fan. Case is Silverstone SG01

You have a link for the cooler you ordered?

That one should be a good deal better than the stock one. If I am not mistaken, the 7700k comes bundled with the cheap all aluminum heatsink instead of the better heatpipe equipped one like the FX 8320 and FX 8350 use. Naturally, Silverstone recommends one of their own coolers for your case, and it isn't cheap.

The problem was 2 fold.

1) horrible AMD heatsink
2) sitting in UEFI is apparently running the CPU at 100%

After installing the new heatsink, Temps dropped, but still hung at 64 C. This number was at least reasonable, so I booted into live Linux to copy some of raid 0 off and the Temps in Linux were 2-3 C over room temp, even while copying 1TB and surfing. Checked by touching the heatsink because this seemed impossible and it was cool. I did update the UEFI to 1.5 before doing anything, that had no effect on Temps. The only thing I can conclude is that sitting in UEFI must be taxing as hell to the CPU for some reason.

Yes, AMD APU coolers are pretty terrible with higher than 65W parts.
