Please bear with me as I try to describe an issue that has become apparent on my Dad's PC.....

He is getting lots of horizontal lines on the monitor display. The home screen is not too bad, but, if you go on to Internet Explorer or anything with a mainly white background then these become very apparent.

The graphics is from an ASUS P8H61-MX motherboard and is using the digital (DVI) connection.

I thought it might be the lead so I tried an analogue VGA cable but this made it MUCH worse. Strangely enough, when we went back to the digital one then the lines had reduced quite a bit.

Anybody any ideas what is going on.....monitor, cable, motherboard??????

Solution
The easiest way to eliminate the motherboard (assuming he is using integrated graphics) is try another monitor. If the problem persists with another monitor, then it's the motherboard. If it's gone then it is likely the monitor. Since the problem was worse with the VGA cable, it's likely not the cable.

If that's not possible, you could try the suspect monitor on another computer.

Take techgeek's suggestion and also plug something else into the monitor, twice - once with the same cable and once with another cable. You can use another computer if you want, but a cablebox or anything with a compatible video out would work. If the issue persists on both cables, it's definitely the monitor. It the monitor displays properly on both cables, then it likely isn't the monitor or the cable. If it works on one cable but not the other, then it's likely the cable. Check for bent pins, which can cause your issue, and switch out the cable if there are no bent pins.
