Hi!

I've been through 2 weeks of instense researching now to find out why none of my 2 graphics cards have worked.

I first received a Radeon HD 7970, which didn't work at all. Then, after I found out that my friends one worked - I got a refund and bought a new one. I bought a XFX Radeon R9 280x. Received it and did a clean Windows 7 64-Bit install with clean driver install. Same problems. I tried both Windows 7 64-Bit pro and home premium. None of which worked.

I tested my friend's 7970 in mine today to find out if his would work in mine - which it did.

I installed it + the drivers after using driver sweeper - and it ran fantastic. I experienced after a little while that the computer crashed while being under pressure and watching youtube. Those two caused issues. (driver restoring and computer hung completely once)

I installed ASUS GPU Tweak, and under-volted the GPU from 1169 to 1100 - and I haven't seen any more problems.

I installed Trackmania car game, gamed it while multitasking with many programs while listening to music and having 2-3 youtube video's running in the background. The computer ran just as I would expect, REALLY fast - never felt anything this fast before.

Do you think that a clean Windows 7 64-Bit Professional install, with a clean driver install with my new GPU that's on its way:

Would do the trick?
And under-volt slightly if needed?

Thanks;)
Best regards,
Erik

Could you give us some information on what this self built computer is? Like the motherboard and PSU at least?

It should, I seen higher clocks on a GPU crash a system or hang, and Down clocking it helped make it not crash. Have fun with your new system! :D

Yeah, didn't take much under-volt to fix it:)  Can't wait to get my new GPU;) Thanks!:)

Whats the stock voltage for a MSI Radeon R9 280x and a XFX Radeon HD 7970?

Does it happen that a slight undervolt is required for stable performance?

280x is 1156mV i believe, and the 7970 is 1.162 volts.

can the few 7 volts differentiate between good performance, and from a computer that'll ocasionally crash during load?

Aka, from 1169->1162

Thanks;)

Yes a few volts could crash a computer and 1 volt below can make it run like nothing happened.

Then that's the culprit of the small error. That's weird, but if you imagine a light bulb - it makes sense. Just a little more power than what it likes and it breakes

Exactly, such a small thing of a number can ruin a great experience.
