Copying HDD for transfer to a differant partition

I am trying to copy XP pro to avoid a new install after installing Mindiws 7 Upgrade. Is this a possability? I was thing I could just copy it to a external HDD, install the upgrade and make a partition to put the copied XP in.

You can copy your Windows XP partition to an external hard drive as a disk image using disk imaging software.
